Audio Station Remote
Voyetra/Turtle Beach
By Gordon Carrolton

I am somewhat satisfied with Audio Station remote. There are many cool features, and most of them work (to some degree).

The Good

  • RF/IR Remote controls predefined play lists.
  • RF/IR Remote also controls 8 X10 modules, Sat, DVD, Cable, TV etc...
  • RF/IR Remote controls audio volume (OS Level)
  • Program automatically searches and databases all of you tunes on installation.
  • Software includes CDDB Support.

The Bad

If you are interested in purchasing this product, note that "* Some Features may not be available in Windows NT 4.0 and/or Windows 2000" disclaimer. I am running the system on Windows 2000 Pro and the software seems buggy. The disclaimer says it all. This product was obviously not written/tested/released with 2000 or NT (I have tried it on both). Then again I wouldn't even consider moving to 95/98/ME for obvious reasons.

Some of the buggy behavior that I have been seeing.

  • Importing play lists seems to crash the program sometimes.
  • Previously created play lists seem to stop working?
  • Don't create a play list called "Phish" if the automatic indexing process created a Band Category called "Phish" This seems to cause problems since each band category has an underlying playlist and 2 of the same name causes conflicts.
  • "Database Cleanup/ Managment Tools" - Are near useless. You can modify each category name, add a new category etc... But if you move the physical location of the original file, the program will not synch up and you must click delete in the database cleanup interface for each file that you moved.

Summary

I am using this to run all of the audio in my house. I link the sound card out to an amp which powers all of the speakers hard wired into my house. Remote range is no problem from anywhere in a fairly large 2 story house. If the bugs were fixed, I could see this product being an essential part of home living. For now I guess I'll have to live with the bugs...
