XCam XRay by Rick LaBanca X10 Corporation has offered wireless cameras in one form or another for a while. The latest offering is called the XRay. Since this is really a bundle of individual items (which most can be purchased individually), I'm going to review them separately. As of this first draft, the software review is incomplete -- because I can't get it to run! The package is inexpensive, as of January 2000, the latest "ends at midnight" sale has it for $149. But is it really a bargain?
First, you get a 2.4ghz audio/video transmitter and receiver pair. These two small units when plugged in and aimed roughly at each other will send a composite video, and stereo audio signal across an span of no more than 100 feet, through walls. Second, you get a color camera with built in microphone to plug into the transmitter. Last, you get the newest toy, a USB to composite video cable, allowing you to connect the receiver to your computer without a video capture board. You also get some software to allow remote video snapshot access. The server software working in conjunction with the USB video on your computer, can send still pictures over the Internet via e-mail. Using the client software, you can retrieve still shots over the Internet on demand. The kit includes all needed connectors. You get RCA connectors for all the audio/video on each end, cable for RF connection, 1/8" to 1/8" jacks for the DSS remote wire. The kit has the camera in one box, the sender/receivers in another, and the USB is floating around in a bag. Read the reviews that interest you....
The kit is somewhat limited for its advertised use, mainly because of the camera, which needs to have very bright illumination. But the other components do their jobs, and are good if you have an need for them. The software is still very rough and not too useful beyond a simple picture downloader. The price is not a bad deal for $150 if you do want all the components, and arguably good even if you want all but the camera. However, financial advice on X10 items is hard to give, given the shifting sands of pricing at X10, so do your cipherin' to determine what is the best deal. Overall kit impression: B. |
